Overview

Christopher Nakamura brings over 14 years of experience in litigation, dispute resolution, commercial and corporations law, wills and estate and property law.

Christopher commenced his practice with Frank Jongkind & Co, a practice based in Charleville, Queensland with a proud history of servicing clients back to 1938.  In 2015, he joined Margaret Tan & Associates, a boutique law firm in Sydney established in 1987, before establishing his own legal practice, Egis Legal, in 2017.

Christopher is known to his clients as their “professional troubleshooter” for his competence and abilities to often find “out of the box” practical legal solutions for his clients.  He has advised corporations, individuals, local governments, and not-for-profit organisations and incorporated associations.  Christopher is an experienced litigation lawyer who has represented clients from diverse backgrounds in the Queensland Magistrates Court, Queensland District Court, Queensland Supreme Court, NSW Local Courts, NSW District Courts, NSW Supreme Court, Federal Courts and the Family Court in all stages of litigations.

Commercial and Business Law

Christopher’s commercial and business service offerings include acting on sales and purchases of companies, shares and businesses, drawing up contracts for shareholders, joint ventures and supply agreements, commercial and retail leases and providing advice to companies on their corporate governance and their obligations under the Corporations Act.

Christopher aims to provide his clients with legal advice which is both legally sound and commercially practical.  To better understand his clients’ issues and sharpen his business acumen, Christopher has undertaken and successfully completed the Company Director CourseTM with the Australian Institute of Company Directors, which is acknowledged internationally as the gold standard of directors training course, and a Master of Business Administration with the Griffith University.

Christopher has acted for a wide variety of clients including companies, local governments, businesses, registered clubs and Not-For-Profit organisations on their commercial contracts and constitutional matters.

Dispute Resolution

As an experienced litigation lawyer, Christopher has conducted many negotiations and has successfully settled disputes for individuals, businesses, companies, shareholders and directors.  Christopher has assisted his clients who faced allegations of breach of directors’ duties, in contractual disputes, shareholders and inter-corporate disagreements and land disputes. Christopher has also advised clients in more formal mediation conferences involving not just the disputing parties but also impartial mediators. Christopher’s dispute resolutions skills extend over the entirety of the litigation stages from initial advice to trials.

Notarial Services

Christopher is one of very few notaries public in Sydney who speak and read Bahasa Indonesia.  As a notary public, Christopher has assisted many Indonesian clients who needed to execute documents, such as contract, powers of attorney and deeds, in Australia but for use in Indonesia.  Christopher’s notarial services include preparing and issuing notarial certificates, preparing and lodging applications with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to obtain Apostille or Authentication Certificates, preparing and lodging applications with the Consulate General of Republic Indonesia and other foreign embassies and copy of document certifications.

Key Achievements

Select examples of Christopher’s experience include:

  • Represent clients in litigation matters including:
    • commercial and contractual disputes in the Supreme Court of NSW for claims of more than $500,000;
    • matrimonial disputes with asset pools of more than $3 million at the Federal Circuit Court;
    • building disputes at the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the District Court of NSW for claims of more than $250,000;
    • transfer duties and land tax disputes of more than $40,000 in value.
  • Draft high value commercial leases and provide comprehensive advice to clients, emphasising case strategy, strengths, weaknesses, and risks associated with each lease.
  • Represent clients in sales of commercial property valued between $30 million and $60 million.

Recognition

Christopher was awarded:

  • a Bachelor of Computer Science from the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 2004;
  • a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the UWA in 2007;
  • a Master of Laws (LLM) with distinction from the Australian National University (ANU) in 2012;
  • a Graduate Certificate in Australian Migration Law and Practice from the ANU in 2014;
  • post nominal GAICD by the Australian Institute of Company Directors after successfully completed the Company Directors CourseTM; and
  • a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Griffith University in 2022.

Christopher was admitted in the Supreme Court of Western Australia, the Supreme Court of Australian Capital Territory, the High Court of Australia and the New South Wales Roll of Public Notaries.   Christopher was also admitted to the Golden Key International Honour Society in 2009 for his outstanding academic achievement.
